photography: narrative: island life

For people who live on the Turtle Islands off the south coast of Sierra Leone, life is on the water.

Nyangai, a tiny crescent of an island, is disappearing as the ocean slowly erodes and the coconut palms fall. Fishing is the only show in town but it is getting more and more difficult to find fish using the old methods because of unregulated industrial overfishing. I made these images of daily life with the people I knew on Nyangai in 2013, while living on the island to assist in the making of a film about traditional fishing.
